नई दिल्ली। दिल्ली में 16 दिसंबर 2012 को एक महिला के साथ हुए सामूहिक बलात्कार एवं हत्या के मामले के चारों दोषियों को शुक्रवार की सुबह साढ़े पांच बजे फांसी दे दी गई। इसके साथ ही देश को झकझोर देने वाले, यौन उत्पीड़न के इस भयानक अध्याय का अंत हो गया। मुकेश सिंह (32), पवन गुप्ता (25), विनय शर्मा (26) और अक्षय कुमार सिंह (31) को सुबह साढ़े पांच बजे फांसी के फंदे पर लटकाया गया।

जेल प्रशासन सूत्रों के अनुसार चारों दोषियों को एक साथ फांसी पर लटकाया गया और इसके लिए जेल नंबर-3 की फांसी कोठी में दो तख्तों पर चारों को लटकाने के लिए चार हैंगर बनाए गए थे। इनमें से एक का लीवर मेरठ से आए जल्लाद पवन ने खींचा तथा दूसरे लीवर को जेल स्टाफ ने खींचा।

जेल अधिकारियों ने बताया कि चारों दोषियों के शव करीब आधे घंटे तक फंदे पर झूलते रहे जो जेल नियमावली के अनुसार फांसी के बाद की अनिवार्य प्रक्रिया है। दक्षिण एशिया के सबसे बड़े जेल परिसर तिहाड़ जेल में पहली बार चार दोषियों को एक साथ फांसी दी गई।
इस जेल में 16,000 से अधिक कैदी हैं। चारों दोषियों ने फांसी से बचने के लिए अपने सभी कानूनी विकल्पों का पूरा इस्तेमाल किया और गुरुवार की रात तक इस मामले की सुनवाई चली। सामूहिक बलात्कार एवं हत्या के इस मामले के इन दोषियों को फांसी की सजा सुनाए जाने के बाद तीन बार सजा की तामील के लिए तारीखें तय हुईं लेकिन फांसी टलती गई।

अंतत: शुक्रवार सुबह चारों दोषियों को फांसी दे दी गई। आखिरी पैंतरा चलते हुए एक दोषी ने दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय और फांसी से कुछ घंटे पहले उच्चतम न्यायालय का दरवाजा खटखटाया। फांसी से कुछ घंटों पहले पवन कुमार गुप्ता ने राष्ट्रपति द्वारा दूसरी दया याचिका खारिज किए जाने को चुनौती देते हुए सुप्रीम कोर्ट का रुख किया। अभूतपूर्व रूप से देर रात ढाई बजे सुनवाई शुरू हुई और एक घंटे तक चली। सुप्रीम कोर्ट की एक पीठ ने उसकी याचिका खारिज करते हुए फांसी का रास्ता साफ कर दिया।
The four convicts were hanged at around 5.30 am on Friday, 16 December 2012 in the gang rape and murder case of a woman. According to jail administration sources, the four convicts were hanged together and for this, four hangars were made to hang the four on two planks in the hanging cell of jail number-3. One of these levers was drawn by the executioner Pawan from Meerut and the other lever was pulled by the jail staff.
Jail officials said that the bodies of the four convicts kept hanging on the noose for about half an hour, which according to the jail manual is a mandatory procedure after hanging. Four convicts were hanged together for the first time in Tihar Jail, the largest prison complex in South Asia.
The prison has more than 16,000 inmates. The four convicts made full use of all their legal options to avoid being hanged and the case went on trial till Thursday night. After the convicts were sentenced to death in this case of gang rape and murder, the dates for the execution of the sentence were fixed three times but the execution was postponed.
Finally on Friday morning the four convicts were hanged. In the last move, a convict approached the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court just hours before the execution. Hours before the execution, Pawan Kumar Gupta moved the Supreme Court challenging the President’s rejection of the second mercy petition. The hearing began at an unprecedented two and a half hours and lasted for an hour. A bench of the Supreme Court rejected his petition and cleared the way for the execution.
