NEW DELHI: After the United States of America (USA) and Brazil, India will become the third country to cross three lakh deaths due to coronavirus. As of May 23, 2021, a total of 2,99,266 deaths have been recorded in India, as per the data on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). The nation has recorded as many as 28,05,399 COVID-19 active cases as of May 23, 2021, while 2,34,25,467 corona patients have been discharged.
With the rise in corona cases, the defence minister, Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting for CBSE 12 board exams 2021. After the meeting, the education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has requested all the state governments to send their suggestions by May 25, 2021.

A dip in COVID-19 cases within 24 hours
With a total of 1,18,001 cases, India recorded a dip in coronavirus cases and logged 3,741 deaths. As many as 3,55,102 patients have been cured/discharged/migrated. According to the data, 21,23,782 coronavirus tests were done as of May 22, 2021. Across the country, Karnataka recorded the highest 31,034 COVID cases, while with only 4 cases Andaman and Nicobar Island have the lowest number of covid positive patients.
According to the ministry reports, 19,50,04,184 Indian citizens have been vaccinated as of May 23, 2021, 08:00 AM.
State government extends COVID-19 lockdown
Due to a surge in COVID cases, various state and UT governments have extended the lockdown. The chief minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot has announced the three-tier COVID-19 lockdown from May 24 to June 8, 2021. While the Haryana, Puducherry and Delhi governments have extended the coronavirus lockdown till May 31.
